My first one tore up my thumb! The second one is fantastic!

My first one tore up my thumb! The second one is fantastic!
So I have had mixed success with this knife. I have been eyeballing the CRKT squid for sometime but have never bought one until my local hardware store was selling them on closeout for under $10. So I bought two figuring why not since that is close to the normal price of one. When I got home I opened the first one and immediately found out that there was a problem. The blade was so difficult to open it was almost unusable. I lubricated the pivot and worked the blade open and closed for the better part of three days and it didn't get any better. In fact I worked the thumbstud so much, and the action was so stiff, that the skin under my thumbnail started so separate from the nail (see photos). In addition I noticed that there was some blade play opening the knife, something just felt loose in there which was probably contributing to the opening issue. So, somewhat desperately I opened the second knife. The action on this was perfect, just a bit stiff so I don't worry about it popping open in my pocket (it is tip up carry!) but still easy enough that is smoothly opens and locks up tight. I really love framelock knives and there's always a risk with these small framelocks that the blade centering is off, but both of these were dead center. The black stone washing is a very nice aesthetic, and gives the knife a very good appearance. Some folks may complain about the size but for just carrying around every day I think it's perfect. It's not my first choice for the outdoors or camping but for everything else it's great. It even fits in that seemingly useless 5th jeans pocket! The steel is 8Cr13MoV which really isn't that bad of a steel. The scales are listed as 2Cr13 which is no great shakes but it is just the scales and I applaud CRKT for listing the materials, most knife makers would just say "stainless" and not bother to tell you. I was hovering at 3 stars because of my first experience but when I contacted CRKT they said they would take care of it no problem if I mailed it to them. A bit of pain in the butt, however they did respond immediately and were pleasant. I finally had to go with 4 stars as the knife itself is really great. My guess is there is just some QA/QC problems with subbing the manufacture out to China. Yes it's made in China....I try to make my reviews useful and engaging. Pros: Price
Cons: Difficult to open with one hand

The Bottom Line: This is a fantastic EDC knife that comes at a great price point.
For the past few weeks I have been using this knife as my EDC. I have been moderately using it on a daily basis. Some of tasks that I use it for are opening packages, sharpening a pencil (I was in a pinch), and cutting rope. I have been very pleased with this knife. It has done everything I have needed it to do.

Blade Sharpness:
The blade came out of the box reasonably sharpened. It wasn’t shaving sharp, but it was by no means dull. A Lansky sharpening system would be all you need to put a razor sharp edge on it. The blade is made from 8Cr13MoV Steel which holds its edge fairly well, and it isn’t too difficult to sharpen.

Looks/Finish:
I love the black stonewash finish. It does a great job of hiding little scratches from daily use. The knife doesn’t look bulky, so it hides in the pocket pretty well. It also doesn't look threatening to someone who might not be used to having knifes around. The deep-carry pocket clip, which is tip up carry, has a small CRKT logo on it. There is also a lanyard loop above the pocket clip.

Price:
The price of this knife is one of its greatest features. It does not feel like a sub $20 knife. If you lose yours you can easily buy a new one without breaking the bank. You're going to be hard pressed to find a better EDC knife at a better price.

Durability/Build:
So far this little guy has held up exceptionally well with no sign of giving in. The blade locks up solid in the frame-lock, and there is no side to side blade play. The blade is also not off center when closed.

Ease of Use:
This knife does have a thumb stud to open it. That being said, it is not easy to open with one hand. The thumb stud is too close to the frame to get any leverage. The blade does lock closed firmly. The frame lock is also too stiff to comfortably close the knife with one hand. The ergonomics of the handle are good for its size. I have fairly normal sized hands, and a three finger grip is a perfect fit. There is a nice little choil for the index finger and jimping on the back for your thumb.

If you are looking for a small, tough, affordable and comfortable EDC knife, this is it!
All heavy steel (aluminum back spacer/lanyard hole) build makes for a solid knife, but the rounded edges and streamline folding blade makes for a comfortable knife in the hand or your pocket as well. The Squid is perfectly streamlined opened and closed.
If you are like me, you like to have your EDC clipped inside your front pocket. Many knifes are designed without attention to sharp corners and edges, and that makes it difficult or even painful to reach inside your pocket. For the Squid, this isn't a concern. The squid's blade tucks away in its smooth round handle perfectly.
The stout wide handle offers great control, allowing your first three fingers to grip the handle securely, while the pinky finger prevents your hand from slipping forward onto the blade.
The blade was sharp enough to shave with out of the box, and the frame lock holds secure.
The Squid's blade being under three inches long means you can travel without worrying about state laws and regulations.
The only con I can think of for this knife is that opening the blade does take a little getting used to, but once you start carrying and using the Squid, you can open the blade very quickly and easily. You can even flick the blade open with your thumb without any problem.
I would like to add a couple photos of the Squid against another CRKT product that I love in this price range. The Drifter by CRKT has a great design also, and has a very usable blade design, but I feel that the streamline design of the Squid makes for a better, more pocket friendly companion.
I know I have a lot of good things to say about this knife, but no, I do not work for CRKT. I am a jeweler by trade, and I appreciate the design of this knife.
I own many knives, but I recommend the Squid for EDC!
