Kershaw Leek Knives
One of the most popular of Kershaw knife series, the Leek, has a slim, versatile, modified drop-point blade with good slicing capabilities. The high performing blade steels sharpen to a razor edge and hold the edge for a extended use. The three-inch blade is perfect for most tasks and the slim tip allows the knife to excel at piercing and detail work. SpeedSafe Assisted Opening allows for easy blade deployment with the use of a simple pull back on the ambidextrous flipper. The variety of colors are fade-resistant, scratch-resistant and permanently bonded to the anodized aluminum handle.

High-Performance SteelSandvik 14C28N steel is a high-performance steel with increased nitrogen in the formula for excellent corrosion resistance and hardness. One of the highest performing knife steel in the world that still maintains the productivity benefit of being fine-blankable, 14C28N steel is ideal for knife applications which place high demands on edge sharpness, edge stability and corrosion resistance. |
Attractive Blade FinishKershaw’s Bead-Blasted finish enhances a knife’s aesthetics and complements its end-use. The high-tech finish is achieved by applying a mixture of fine media onto the blade’s steel under high pressure, creating a smooth, non-reflective matte surface. Fine media includes glass and aluminum oxide beads that allow color variation and optimal performance results for an overall stunning effect. |
Fast DeploymentUsing a torsion bar to move the blade out of the handle, Kershaw’s revolutionary SpeedSafe Assisted Opening system enables smooth, secure, fast one-handed blade deployment. Apply manual pressure to the flipper or thumb stud with a light push or pull back to overcome resistance of the torsion bar, and the blade opens smoothly and locks into place for confident handling without premature closure. |
Convenient Pocketclip and Glassbreaker TipKershaw designs pocketclips to fit specific knives according to their weight, intended end use, size, style and hardware. Some knives have multiple carry options, others are more streamlined. The reversible pocketclip allows user to choose to carry knife tip-up or tip-down or to choose on which side knife carries. The user may select either a preferred tip position or a preferred carry side. |

One-Handed FlipperKnives with SpeedSafe open have two options for one-handed blade deployment. To activate the smooth, instant open, user can push a thumbstud or press a flipper. The flipper on SpeedSafe assisted knives is easy to operate by both left- and right-handed users. And, once blade swings open and locks into place, flipper either disappears for aesthetics or remains visible for added finger protection. |
Durable HandleAluminum, anodized for color, hardness and additional protection, is very durable, stain and scratch resistant for strong knife handles. Anodizing changes the aluminum’s surface so a porous coating can be applied that will accept a colored dye. Anodized aluminum gives the knife bright, eye-catching, unique colors and provides a nice, hefty, solid feel to the knife without making the knife heavy. |
Secure Locking SystemWith two steel plates, or liners, on the inside of each handle scale, the liner locking system safely secures the blade open and prevents unwanted blade closure. The lockbar butts up against the blade’s backend to prevent closure, and angles or is bent towards the blade tang creating a bias locked position. Apply manual force to move the lockbar to the side and fold the blade back into the handle. Designed to keep the blade inside the handle, the Kershaw Tip Lock system is featured on all Leek and Scallion SpeedSafe knives. This simple slider, when engaged, ensures the blade will not prematurely open if not in use. The Tip Lock system is located where the tip of the blade meets the handle scales in the closed position. A press of the thumb activates the Tip Lock for secure, safe knife use. |

The brilliant orange of the anodized-aluminum handle is a fade-resistant, scratch-resistant dye that's permanently bonded to the aluminum—so it looks good now and will continue to look good later. The business end of the knife is a task-ready 3-inch blade of Sandvik 14C28N stainless steel, a steel designed in a partnership between Kershaw and Sandvik. The design exudes quality. Fit and finish are excellent and the knife feels solid and capable in your hand. The SpeedSafe blade deployment is very slick, and combined with the liner lock allows for complete one-hand operation - from opening to closing. The little locking mechanism preventing inadvertent deployment is nice, but superfluous. Blade closure is resolute, there is no play, no sense of looseness.
The burnt orange coating on the aluminum scales produces a matte texture. I feel this an improvement over my original Leek, which without the coating has more of a slippery feel to it. The Leek's design offers a very slim profile, and as others have mentioned, cuts a low profile clipped in your pocket.
I'm an urban guy, and don't foresee ever field-dressing a deer, resorting to harsh survival tactics (please, how many stars is that hotel?), or participating in any combat maneuvers. The Leek, therefore, does everything I need it to do. If those other things are part of your daily life, then you'd probably need something a bit more substantial than the Leek.
The knife is shipped in a cardboard Kershaw box. Inside the box is the knife in a plastic sleeve with a little dessicant pack. Warranty/information card is included.
Initial impression is great. The anodizing is phenomenal and the bead blasted steel matches well with the orange. It isn't as vibrant as the picture shows, not a 'blaze' orange, more like a burnt copper. Gorgeous. The silver hardware meshes well with the orange. The clip is reversible, tip up or down, right hand only and is solid. Tip up carry will expose about an inch of the knife. The safety works but seems out of place to me. I used a Torx bit and removed it altogether.
The operation of the SpeedSafe works fine, slightly slower than the Blur, about on par with the Brawler. The SS actuator tab is small-ish but has adequate enough jimping to be activated pretty quickly. The knife pops open with a 'thwack' and locks up solidly. The blade is held in place with a standard liner lock. The lock itself is slightly difficult to access but isn't super stiff, which is a pro. Approximately 60% lock engagement on my model.
Now to the blade. This mother came SHARP. Bald spots on my forearm and leg, Very nice. The profile is thin, about 3/4 of an inch wide at its widest area down to a needle point. Don't drop this on your toe or you'll be en route to the ER. Jimping on the spine is so-so. The grind is nice and it's a very attractive knife. 3 inch, razor sharp blade. One drawback is the thin-ness of the blade. Definitely light duty use, the tip will certainly snap if used for prying, don't do it.
In my opinion, Kershaw hit a home run with this knife, so long as you know that this isn't a survival knife. It is without a doubt a very serviceable EDC knife that has found it's way into my rotation. 5 star recommendation from me.
The blade was near razor sharp out of the box, which is always nice. The first thing I noticed was how well fit and finished the knife was. The finish on the handle scaled is a beautiful smooth anodize, a little darker than it shows in the pictures on Amazon. The blade is, as I said, very sharp and smooth with no imperfections to be found. The Bass Pro and Select-Fire knives I mentioned before had rough edges and finishes and weren't as polished as this. I have nothing against Chinese knives, but the quality difference between them and this American-made piece is very apparent.
Best of all, the "Speed Safe" mechanism is reliable and opens very quickly. There's a convenient little lock on the backside to prevent the blade from opening in your pocket, and by its design it's legal in Canada. It's no doubt the best assisted-opening system I've ever used.
Overall I love the Leek, it's perfect for what I need (a light modest-sized everyday carry knife) and by its reputation I have no doubt it'll hold up well over the years.
