Chaparral Raffir Noble
High Performance Prestige Knife
Spyderco’s Chaparral series is a family of slim, pocket-friendly gentlemen’s folding knives that celebrates the diversity of different handle materials and treatments. This unique version of the Chaparral features full stainless steel liners and smoke-colored Raffir Noble scales. Manufactured in Denmark, Raffir is a strikingly beautiful composite material that encapsulates metal mesh in a durable, translucent epoxy resin. The Raffir Noble pattern combines a smoke-colored acrylic with a mixture of brass and copper mesh. When machined and polished to create knife scales, it reveals a unique, semi-transparent, three-dimensional pattern with amazing visual depth and character.
Like the other members of Spyderco’s Chaparral family, this knife features a full-flat-ground PlainEdge blade crafted from premium CTS XHP stainless steel, a fully accessible Round Hole for ambidextrous one-handed opening, a sturdy back lock mechanism, and a reversible deep-pocket wire clip that supports discreet left or right-side tip-up carry.
A highly functional pocketknife that also offers tremendous pride of ownership, the Chaparral Raffir Noble truly cuts with class.

Size:
The folded length of this knife is barely larger than that of the Pingo that I have been carrying daily for the last year. That makes it perfect for unobtrusive carry in just about any situation where a knife is permitted. Despite that the blade length is more than adequate for my needs. This thing will easily slice to the center of a large grapefruit. (Hey, I like grapefruit.)
Handling:
The Chaparral offers a decent four-finger grip if the index finger is placed in the 50/50 choil. I have medium-sized hands and about a half inch of grip to spare. The knife is quite comfortable in the hand. I think its thinness might become tiresome in long-duration use but that's not really what this blade is for. The carbon fiber/G10 laminate scales are notable in that they offer more grip than I expected. I'd say they're on par with the FRN scales on my other Spyderco knives or perhaps even a bit more secure in the hand.
The “spyder hole” makes one-handed opening as easy as you would expect. It just works. (My only caution would be to people who insist on a blade that can flick open at high speed, which this doesn't thanks to the drag of the lock on the pivot.) One-handed closing is a little more tricky. Out of the box the lock on my knife was **extremely** stiff to the point that two-handed closing was a requirement. After about a week either it had softened or I had adapted because now I can get it closed one-handed every time. Middle finger on the lock, thumb opposite, and index finger on the tang to start the blade closed. I'm perfectly fine with that.
Fit & Finish:
Taichung-made Spyderco knives have a lot to live up to and this one hasn't disappointed me in the least. The action is perfectly smooth (even if it was stiff at first), the blade has zero play in any direction (even now that the action has loosened up) and I'd be hard-pressed to find a single defect. I really like how the liners, scales, and backspring look as if they were machined as a single piece. Everything fits together perfectly. Overall the workmanship leaves little or nothing to be desired. The only blemish I've noticed is a very light score mark on the tang from opening and closing. That doesn't really bother me considering that my knives are meant to be used.
Blade:
What, you actually want to cut things? Fine. So far I have absolutely nothing bad to say. The leaf shape works well for slicing and piercing alike, and it came scary sharp right out of the box. I haven't had it long enough to attest to durability but I don't expect problems from such a high-quality steel. (I have Spyderco knives with BD1 and N690Co and no complaints with those, so I can't imagine having a problem with XHP.)
The down-side:
I've written plenty of nice things about the Chaparral, but no knife can be all things to all people. Again, the locking mechanism might not do it for you if supersonic deployment is important. And I think there will be some who simply can't get it closed with one hand, especially if hand strength is an issue. Also, the Chaparral isn't ideal for those who prefer to go clipless since the rear screw doesn't quite seat without the clip to take up space. (The knife seems to work fine that way.)
Summary:
The Chaparral is a very well-made, compact, and handsome EDC knife.
